A true Kashmiri shawl is a craft piece, not a fashion item. It is made from very fine wool, often pashmina, and finished by hand. The embroidery styles have their own names: sozni is fine needlework, aari is worked with a hooked needle, and tilla uses metallic thread. A kani shawl is different again, because its pattern is woven into the cloth rather than stitched on top.
That kind of work takes a long time, and it is sold mostly by specialist shawl sellers, not the brands we shop every week. Which is exactly what the data shows. Across 19 catalogues, not one shawl is called Kashmiri, and the only Kashmiri products in stock are 49 outfits with Kashmiri style embroidery.

How to Spot a Fake Kashmiri Shawl

The word pashmina on a label is not proof. Edenrobe lists its shawls as pashmina jacquard, and a label like that does not tell you how much of the fibre is actually pashmina. A real Kashmiri shawl seller should be able to state the fibre content, such as 100 percent pashmina, in writing.
- Ask for the fibre content in writing. “Pashmina style” and “pashmina blend” are not the same as pure pashmina.
- Feel the weight. Fine wool is surprisingly light for how warm it is. Heavy and slippery usually means synthetic.
- Turn it over. Hand embroidery is slightly uneven on the back. Perfectly regular stitches usually mean a machine.
- Watch the shine. Real wool has a soft, matt glow. A bright plastic shine is a warning sign.
- Do not trust the ring test alone. Pulling a shawl through a ring only proves it is thin, and thin synthetics pass too.
- Be suspicious of a bargain. Hand work takes a long time, so a hand embroidered Kashmiri shawl at a brand shawl price is almost certainly not one.
